The E-number for vitamin C (ascorbic acid), which is commonly added to food as a preservative thanks to its antioxidant properties. Presumably the designation E300 is used by manufacturers who prefer their customers to think they are eating a risky (and hence exciting) chemical additive, not just some harmless nutrient.
