American entertainer, 1903-1978. Attended Northwestern University. A vaudeville performer with a popular ventriloqist act, Bergen, with his sidekick/dummy, Charlie McCarthy, became one of the top radio, television, and film performers of the 1930s, often playing himself. His popular radio show was the Chase and Sanborn Hour. Hosted the 1950s quiz show, Do You Trust Your Wife? He continued making films into the 1970s, his last appearance was in The Muppet Movie as himself. Candice Bergen is his daughter.
