A poem by Heinrich Heine, used by Schumann as the eleventh in his song cycle Dichterliebe.
Ein Jüngling liebt ein Mädchen,
Die hat einen andern erwählt;
Der andre liebt eine andre,
Und hat sich mit dieser vermählt.
Das Mädchen nimmt aus Ärger
Den ersten besten Mann,
Der ihr in den Weg gelaufen;
Der Jüngling ist übel dran.
Es ist ein alte Geschichte,
Doch bleibt sie immer neu;
Und wem sie just passieret,
Dem bricht das Herz entzwei.
A boy loves a girl,
who has chosen another;
the other loves another,
And has married this one.
The girl takes in anger
the first good-enough man
who came her way;
the boy is sick at that.
It's an old story,
but it always stays new;
and whoever it's just happened to,
it breaks their heart in two.
The first verse is very jaunty; the second hardly less so, almost heartlessly, descending only on ist übel dran; and only in the third voice is the tragedy sung as such. A very short, simple song that says it all. |
