Flemish painter born in Seligenstadt in 1435. He became a citizen of Bruges in 1465. Little is known of his education, but it is apparent that the style of Rogier van der Weyden was a major source of inspiration, with its attention to delicate details, but with a more serene, sometimes cool atmosphere, without the dramatic lighting and sometimes chaotic backgrounds common among his contemporaries.
Unlike his colleagues of the fifteenth century, most of his work was done for the church, although a number of portraits survive to this day.
It is believed that Memling remained in Bruges until his death in 1494. Some of his works include:
