Homo is the
genera, the first sapiens is the
species, and the second is the
subspecies. The other well-known kind of us is
Homo sapiens neandertal, which died out about 12,000 years ago I
think. 40,000 years ago we were
archaic Homo sapiens and actually looked a little different than we do
today.
Anthropologists and
biologists do consider them separate from Homo sapiens, in the sense that we are a subspecies of H.s.
