| The Santa Gertrudis cattle breed was one of the first original breeds developed entirely in America. Named for the portion of the King Ranch, in Texas, where they were bred, the Santa Gertrudis is a mix of Shorthorn (5/8) and Brahman (3/8), and the first herd was sired entirely by one bull, named (counter-intuitively enough) 'Monkey.'
Intended as a breed capable of producing Hereford-quality beef in the hot, rough terrain of Texas, the Santa Gertrudis was an immediate success from its introduction in the 1920's, and is now a popular breed around the world, due to its docile disposition, tender meat, and climate adaptability.
