J.R.R. Tolkien:The Lord of the Rings:Sauron

Sauron, whose name means "the abhorred", was a Maia serving the evil Vala known as Melkor, the Enemy. When Melkor ruled his dark kingdom of Utumno, he set Sauron to rule his armory in Angband. Sauron remained his general, taking care of business, even after the War of Powers at the end of the First Age of Stars, when Melkor (by then called Morgoth) was chained. After Melkor's final defeat and the destruction of Angband, Sauron remained, becoming the chief architect of evil in Middle-earth.

In the Second Age of the Sun, Sauron made himself a fair and noble shape and took the name Annatar, "giver of gifts". He tricked the Elves of Eregion into making the nineteen rings of power, in an attempt to gain control of the Elves. In the fires of Mount Doom, he secretly forged the One Ring, putting much of his strength and willpower into it in order to make it strong enough to control the other, very powerful, rings. However, as soon as Sauron put the One Ring on his finger, the elves became aware of his intentions. They managed to hide the three most powerful rings - Narya, Nenya and Vilya - from Sauron, and they were unspoiled and kept in great secrecy by the Eldar. The sixteen other rings, Sauron took and gave instead to the dwarves and humans, the mortal races being more susceptible to his corruption.

Sauron then made war on the Elves of Middle-Earth, driving them far west into the mountains. The Men of Númenór came to the aid of the Elves, leaving their island-kingdom with a great army. Sauron was driven out of the West, and bided his time in Mordor, his new dark kingdom. However, made proud by their power, the Númenóreans once again came to Middle-Earth to defeat Sauron and proclaim themselves lords of the land as well as the seas. As Sauron realized he had no chance against them in battle, he came out of Mordor and surrendered.

The Dark Lord was brought to Númenór as prisoner of the king Ar-Pharazôn. There Sauron obtained the ear of the king, and corrupted his people to build temples and sacrifice to Morgoth, the dark enemy of the World. Sauron led the Númenóreans to attack the Valar and Elves of the Undying Lands. As their fleet landed in the realms that were forbidden to mortals, they drew upon themselves a great cataclysm. The entire Númenorean host was destroyed as the mountains came down upon them. The island of Númenórë sank beneath the sea, and the once-proud kingdom was lost in the waves. Thus Sauron caused the Change of the World, and his first shape was destroyed.

However, his spirit fled to Mordor, and there he took a new form. This second body of Sauron was that of a great warrior, with burning black skin, clad in black armor. At the end of the Second Age, his power grew once more, and the Men and Elves of Middle-Earth formed the Last Alliance and made war on him. As can be seen in the introduction to the film, the One Ring was cut from Sauron's finger by Isildur, prince of the descendants of Númenór. With the source of his power lost, Sauron was again destroyed. What happened to the Ring after this can be found out in Lord of the Rings.

So great was Sauron's power that he once more made himself a form, in the Third Age of the Sun. He manifested himself in a great disembodied Eye which never blinked, ringed with flames and darkness. He started searching for the Ring once again, because he still needed it to fulfill his plans on world mastery. At this time, Sauron bred the creatures of the Uruk-Hai and Olog-Hai. In the War of the Ring, Sauron's spirit was finally banished from the World through the destruction of the One Ring.

Should you notice any inaccuracies in this text, please Blab! me. There is more to say about Sauron, but this will have to do for a short biography. Everything does not fit in one node.

Sauron is also the home planet of a faction of humanity obsessed with eugenics and military conquest in the CoDominium future history of Jerry Pournelle. Specifically focused on in the War World series of pulp science fiction novels.

The rebellious Saurons are fought back to their homeworld by the Imperial Fleet in 2640. Their last defenders are destroyed and the crust of their planet is cracked open by weapons of great power.

One ship escapes to the desolate prison world of Haven, with a small force of bio-engineered Cyborgs. They then proceed to dominate the inferior population in a quest to rebuild their race.

Sauron, in the world of Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future, was a bipedal, flying robot, and the first BioDredd created by Lord Dredd. Sauron was represented by the first computer animation used in a television series, but only in the series itself. His action figure was obviously not an animation, and the videos that came with the toys such as the Interlocker featured him and his clones as traditional cel animations.

Sauron is deservedly feared both because of his weaponry and his near invulnerability. In addition to armor impenetrable by man-portable weapons, Sauron was equipped with your average (for 2147 AD) projectile and energy weapons. He also had a "digitizer" mounted on an odd third arm; this weapon worked like a Star Trek transporter, only without the regeneration of the person on the other end. Instead, the victim was fed to Overmind, Lord Dredd's massive computer whose character was never sufficiently developed in the series' only season. The digitizer was once used as an apt payback for a man who masqueraded as Captain Power, promising to bring aid to pockets of surviving humans, only to betray them to Sauron. It's also the weapon shown during the title credits. In fact, the woman who is digitized during the title somehow escapes from the Overmind and returns to fight with the Resistance.

Sauron, in this case, is pronounced "Saw-ron", not "Sow-ron" like in the Tolkien universe.

A villain published by Marvel Comics. Sauron first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #59.

Karl Lykos was on a visit to Tierra del Fuego in southern Argentina, when he was attacked by pterodactyls. These creatures from the past had escaped from the confines of the Savage Land in Antarctica. The bite somehow triggered a change in Lykos, who now had the ability to drain the life energy from people. Lykos required this energy to live and continued to feed on people for his own survival.

One day, Lykos began to drain the unique energy of a mutant and the additional difference in the energy caused Lykos to transform into a pterodactyl-like human. Driven by a deep hatred of all things mammalian, this new creature began to call itself Sauron, in hopes of striking fear into the hearts of those who heard its name. Little did the lizard-brained beast realize that this name would strike fear in only those with really active imaginations, who had read Tolkien, while a name like Blood Lizard would scare the bejeezus out of the literate and illiterate alike.

But Sauron had very little to worry about in the frightening the crap out of the masses department. Looking like a cross between a pterodactyl and a man, Sauron had massive leathery wings under his arms, razor sharp claws, a nasty attitude, and a pair of indestructible pants. He also possessed the ability to hypnotize people with his gaze, placing him under his complete control. Where as most people would use this ability to make people act like a chicken in a comedy club, Sauron used the ability to cause people to attack each other.

Sauron clashed with the mutant X-Men on a number of occassions always being beaten back and often times returned to his form as Karl Lykos. At one point, he was believed to be cured from ever becoming Sauron again, but through the work of Mortimer Toynbee, the mutant known as the Toad and others, Lykos again became Sauron and joined Toynbee and others in the newest incarnation of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
