I was
promoted the other day. I finally attained those two little scraps of
brass with which to adorn my already overflowing
ring of charms carried in my pocket. One of the
keys is a much larger key than the others on the ring, producing a satisfying, solid clink with each step I take.
I have been promoted. I now hold the coveted position of senior bookseller at Waldenbooks #1106. In the absence of a more senior bookseller or manager, I become the authoritative figurehead in the store. I become the ambassador of the dozens of rungs directly above my position terminating at the very highest levels of corporate management. However limited the territory, I hold, for that brief moment in time, my own personal autocracy.
Within reason, of course.
I have been informed from my manager that, while the customer is not always right (See There Was a Customer Today), that if I am to err towards the favor of the customer, I will not, effectively can not be reprimanded, except of course if a more serious breach of policy is required to err that way. An LP issue, I'm told.
I'm not sure how I feel about being a manager, honestly. I enjoy the extra responsibilities given to me, but using elementary logic, shouldn't extra responsibility equal extra pay? I suppose it's just another issue to take up with the manager.
