Nancy Mitford's 1945 novel, about cousins Frances and Linda, their childhood (loosely based on Mitford's own); and more particularly Linda's life and loves. The 2nd half of the book, set in
Spain during the Civil War and
Paris just before
World War 2, where she meets the love of her life, is especially
poignant. It's a very funny portrait of
English upper-class life
between the wars. And the ending might even make you a bit misty-eyed. The best of all Mitford's novels.
