Church formed after the assassination of Joseph Smith. There was a disagreement as to who the next Prophet and President of the Church should be. Most members followed Brigham Young and went west to Utah. The others stayed in the east to form the RLDS church. They felt that all future Prophets should be decendents of Brother Joseph. The RLDS Church controls many important sites and artifacts of the Mormonism including the body and burial place of Joseph.
