as i slowly rise from my cold steel chair, i allow a smile to escape

i turn to my left and take measured steps towards the bar

(cutting a swath in the crowd before me like a field of tall grass parting my way)

each foot rising from and falling to the floor in rhythm, each hand moving in balance

a direction i head with, a beat i control, and a confidence in the perfect moment

when a heart is broken, a bar is open, and the song in the air is the voice that keeps hope alive for the next day
