abstract nonsense

This is mathematical term (coined by Steenrod) for category theoretic arguments. Typical usage might be
...and the result follows by abstract nonsense.

This terminology nicely puts such arguments is their proper place. The implication is that they just follow from the usual yoga, that the details can safely be left to the reader.
