academic department

One of the administrative groupings within a university. Traditionally departments, disciplines, and programs. The increasing popularity of interdisciplinary programs causes departments to be useful only for administrative purposes.

Typically an academic department will belong to a Faculty and contain a Department Chair and Secretary. Many universities group professors' offices according to department although those that don't (such as Trent University) claim that doing so stifles interdisciplinary research.
