Part of Short-term Memory, closely related to rehearsal. The acoustic code is basically what you use when you repeat words or sounds over and over in your head -- attempting to remember the sounds. This aides in their being taken into long term memory.

The other parts of Short-term memory are Visual code and Semantic code.
