The dispersal of, and adaptation to new environments by, a line of animals or plants, resulting in the evolution of divergent forms, often new species, specialized for surviving the new habitats.

Adaptive radiation is the opposite of the more common slow, measured, progressive evolution. Examples of adaptive radiation include the first fish that crawled onto land, and the early software engineers and graphic designers who became web developers.
