ACLS is the medical protocol for keeping a person
alive when their
heart has failed. It includes
defibrillation, cardiac
drugs, and procedures for applying these techniques in sequence.
CPR is a primitive first step taught as part of
first aid and together with
artificial respiration is called
basic life support to distinguish it from ACLS. ACLS is provided by
physicians,
nurses,
paramedics and other medical professionals and
saves lives if administered quickly.
