An adjective describing something that is not easily chewed, hence requires much chewing before it can be swallowed. This can be because the thing described is tough or sticky, for example. The adjective "chewy" connotes a certain resilience in the thing described, meaning that chewing will deform the described noun rather than crush it. Contrast this with the definition for "crunchy".

When capitalized and used as a proper noun, an affectionate nickname for Chewbacca, a character in the film Star Wars.
