A Chili Cookoff is, as far as I know, a distinctly American tradition. In it, groups of people or families or institutions get together and try to outdo each other's chili recipes. The cookoff is a festive occasion involving much beer and much heartburn. Cookoffs can get rather intense, competition wise, and, in the traditional American way, can be taken way, way too seriously.
