From the idiom: "Poor as a church mouse."

The proverbial church mouse is supposedly less well-off then his neighbors because people do not regularly take their meals in church. In a church, there is no pantry and no large foodstuffs, and thus the church mouse is poor in food, which is presumably how mice measure their wealth.
