Any piece of sotware that translates one source language into a target language, often performing transformations along the way. Usually in reference to software that translates high-level computer source code into machine-dependent object code.

Another name for a S'pht, specifically the ones wearing colored cloaks which cause you much grief throughout the classic Mac OS game Marathon.

Compiler: A Program that takes human readable code and parses it into binary.

One such example being g++ by the Gnu Free Software Group. It is included in GCC, or the Gnu Compiler Collection, and will run on any POSIX complient OS. Some POSIX complient OSes are Linux by Linus Torvalds, BSD, and Mac OS X.
