The set of all possible designs. Any design, be it an organism, artefact, software or system exists in design space, but the actual designs take up a vanishingly small space in it.

Consider all the possible configurations that a set of atoms can assume. Very few of these configurations have a functionality, and even fewer of them has a meaningful functionality.
