A rite of passage for all designers appears to be the creation of a chair.

Possibly this is because, as George Nelson said in his 1953 book Chairs, "every truly original idea - every innovation in design, every new application of materials, every technical invention for furniture - seems to find its most important expression in a chair".

Or possibly it is just that whilst most designers can create imaginative solutions, they are unable to pose imaginative problems.
