Term used to signify usually a
videogame, namely, a
PC game that is extremely addictive (as the name suggests:
crack) and forms an
addiction in itself. Rather, one becomes addicted specifically to playing the game and not to the
computer or to being
online. The latter is mentioned, however, since this addiction is most common in games that offer an option of
multiplayer or are strictly so. Long-term addiction is most common with, but not exclusively,
RPGs, where players
role-play their character thusly creating a new identity of themselves through the character and escaping the ties of
RL (
real life). A rather recent
genre of
PC games (which is most often referred to as "digital crack", being very addictive) is the
MMORPG (
massively multiplayer online role playing game), in which the player immerses him(her)self into the digital world of the game and is able to interact with a
massive amount of players at a time (sometimes thousands). This mirroring of the
real world is much more appealing and
addictive since it allows for (and very often promotes)
social interaction within the game.
Specific titles which are commonly referred to as "digital crack" include such MMORPGs as Asheron's Call, EverQuest, Ultima Online, Anarchy Online, etc. and RPGs such as Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate 2, Diablo 2, etc. and include games of other genres such as FPS (first-person shooter) like Counter-Strike, Quake 3, Tribes, etc.
