A poached, fried, or soft-boiled egg, served with toast cut into long strips. Pick the toast up with your fingers and dip it into the egg yolk.

The term is common in western England and in Pennsylvania in the U.S. I suspect what these two regions have in common is coal mining -- probably the word originated in England, and miner emigrants brought the word to Pittsburgh.
