A distinguishing characteristic is some trait that sets one object apart from other objects in the same class. For example, the facial features of people are distinguishing characteristics that allow us to tell one another apart. The phrase is more often used, however, with traits that make an object more different. For a person, distinguishing characteristics are often special skills or an ever-present article of clothing.
