(Molecular biology) The normal state of DNA in vivo. Two complementary strands of DNA bind to one another via sequence-specific interactions between pairs of nucleotides. Electrostatic repulsion between phosphate groups in the backbone of each strand then force the double-stranded DNA into its familiar helical conformation.
