Dragon boat racing is traditionally held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Lunar Calender - the Dragon Boat Festival.

Story goes that the Chinese scholar and poet Qu Yuen committed suicide in River Mei Lo, in protest to the Chinese government. The locals threw rice cakes into the river to stop the fishes from eating his body.

Dragon boat racing is now a sport, and a multicultural one too in Sydney. The rowers compete in a canoe shaped like a dragon's head, with a loud drum beating away.
