A new and theoretical type of
propulsion system using
electromagnetism to propel objects. Being develloped by the US
Department of Energy and
David Goodwin for future
space applications. It works by harnessing the
energy caused when a supercooled
electromagnet is "ramping up" and emits pulses of
electromagnetic energy. If the
electromagnet could be forced to emit these pulses in a single direction they could be used to propel
spacecraft faster and furthur than any current means. Such a propulsion system would use fantastic amounts of electrical energy and would require new means of producing energy in space (such as a
nuclear space reactor).
