expanded memory

In MS-DOS systems, extra memory that can be mapped to a 64K portion of the microprocessor's address space, in 16K pages. In early Intel PCs, this memory was contained on an expansion card. Later PCs were able to use software to simulate the operation of one of these cards using a software DOS memory management utility and the computer's own extended memory. These memory pages are made accessible through the EMS interface.
