external editor

In some programs, especially in the Unix world where modular design has always been the design philosophy of choice, rather than add yet another text editor component with its underpowered set of keyboard shortcuts and other little quirks (or in addition to one), the user can select an external program to serve as an editor, and thus use his editor of choice to manipulate text.
