The external world is usually thought of as a world that does not depend on any
mind for
existence. Philosophers have
described the world in various ways: as made of
mind-independent matter alone,
both mind and matter,
minds and ideas, and as made of
ideas only. To the
idealist, the
appearance of an external world is
illusion, since in
truth the
real world is an "internal" or mental one.
