Style of
downhill skiing in which the skier subjects themselves to much more adverse conditions than normal.
Extreme Skiing frequently involves
steep slopes, large drops off of
cliffs, or difficult
aerial maneuvers. Many types of skiing could now be considered extreme including heli-skiing, out-of-bounds skiing, and even
cross country skiing with a chainsaw. Possibly coined by famous extreme
film maker
Warren Miller, he helped foster the "extreme"
era with his many videos. One of the more famous extreme skiers is
Glen Plake who has been sporting a
fashionable mohawk since the
eighties. Extreme skiing reached the masses with the popularity of
extreme sports, and now has its own
World Championship as part of the Extreme Games. Extreme skiing suffers from
overuse of the word extreme and has been known to
injure less-than talented skiers.
