A grease-spot
photometer is a simple means of comparing the intensities of two sources of
light. A screen of white
paper, rendered partially
translucent by a spot of grease, is
illuminated normally by the two sources, one on each side. The position of the
screen is adjusted until the grease spot is indistinguishable from its surround, when the
illuminations of the two sides may be
assumed to be equal.
