In cryptography, this involves giving an escrow agent (usually a law enforcement or intelligence agency) the ability to read otherwise encrypted traffic, either by entrusting the agents with private key information or by use of a kleptographic system. This idea was pioneered by Silvio Micali, who was paid a million dollars by the US Government for his patents when they used his ideas in the Clipper chip. Shh... Big Brother is listening!
