The kiekie (
Freycinetia baueriana ssp banksii) is a climbing shrub native to
New Zealand. It grows in thickets or climbs tree trunks, attaching itself by its roots. Leaves are crowded in bunches at the ends of the stems. Flowers have sweet-tasting edible
bracts called tawhara; female flowers are in cylindrical spikes consisting of yellowish edible berries known as ureure.
Maori use fibres from the kiekie to make
cloaks,
mats,
baskets, and
tukutuku (woven wall panels).
