In diatonic harmony, the seventh degree of the scale which "leads" to the 8th/1st degree, or tonic.

It's what you hear in V7 chords that makes your ear think that it "wants to go to" the I chord.

The seventh scale degree has a natural tendancy towards tonic and as such is a very strong harmonic force.
