Something my high school fencing coach was very fond of saying. "Having an excuse is not as good as being there", "Apologizing later is not as good as being there", and so on. The gist of it was that not being at practice was a Bad Thing, and while reasons for not being there were acceptable, he still wasn't bound to be very happy about it.
