Cherry trees, in the genus
Prunus, are important and popular trees in
America and other areas. Cherry trees are actually in the
rose family (
Rosaceae) along with
apples,
pears,
pyracanthas, and various other plants. They are prized for their small tasty
fruits, and also for their beautiful
flowers, especially in areas such as
Japan and in
Washington, DC. In Japan
cherry flowers are particularly important and are found in
art,
anime, and other displays of culture. Cherry trees are native to various areas; many are native to
Asia but varieties are also native to
North America. One variety, the Catalina Cherry, grows in
southern california, and although not known for tasty
fruit is an interesting
landscape tree. Cherry trees vary in growing requirements by species, but are fairly hardy, and most kinds can survive hard
freezes and
snow. The trees generally dont grow to excessively large size or cause problems.
