Although in stereotype often closely associated with marijuana smoking and large quantities of hippies, Humboldt State University in Arcata, California is host to a wide variety of people and perspectives. "Humboldt is consistently cited as being in the 'Top 10%' of all U.S. colleges and universities for academic quality" -HSU WebPages. The people who attend Humboldt State generally agree that the campus is located in one of the most beautiful locations in the world, nestled between the Pacific Ocean, the Trinity Alps, grand redwood forests, and a sky clear of smog. To be fair however, it can be noted that a number of the residence halls at HSU have purportedly been ranked in "High Times magazine" as amongst the top ten easiest residence halls in the U.S. to purchase marijuana in. Perhaps even by the dread locks-sporting, guitar-playing, Birkenstock-wearing hippie (also spelled hippy) that the Humboldt legend refers to. There is a bit of truth to the stereotype.
