John Henry Newman was a Roman Catholic priest and the author of several hymns and writings. Among his writings are: Apologia and Dream of Gerontius. Hymns written by him include: Firmly I Believe and Truly,Lead, Kindly Light, and Praise to the Holiest in the Height. He also translated several works including: Come, Holy Ghost, Who Ever One, Now That the Daylight Dies Away, and Now That the Sun Is Gleaming Bright.
He was born on February 21, 1801 in London, England, died August 11, 1890 in the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri, Edgbaston, Birmingham, England. He attended Trinity college in Oxford where he changed from studying law to obtain his ordination in 1824. Although he was raised as a Calvinist he moved to Roman Catholicism and became the Cardinal Deacon of St. George in Velabro. The Catholic Encyclopedia has a lengthy article about him.
