But seriously folks, I rang up the groceries for quite a cross-section on the population this summer. And it would never fail, these fat people would come through my line buying all kinds of chips, chocolate, cookies, and maybe a slab of beef. If this wasn't bad enough, I'd ring it up and they would put it on food stamps. Hello? My tax dollars going to make your ass even fatter?

Well, these fatasses need to feed their kids. Sometimes they have skinny little kids. You know why their kids are so damn skinny? Because their parents are stealing the food from the kids' plates! This isn't rocket science, people. You're a 5'2" female who weighs 260 pounds, and buying chocolate on government money! Ever heard of a vegetable? Of course not!!! That would make sense.

One possible answer is that the average price per calorie in America is inverted from most of the rest of the world.

For example: A 79 cent, 81.0g apple with the skin on is 81 kcal whereas a 79 cent, 51.0g M&M Mars 3 Musketeers Bar is a whopping 212 kcal.

The key is that the apple is just over 1 cent per calorie while the candy bar is only 0.37 cents per calorie. Not to forget to mention calories by weight: 1 kcal per gram for the apple vs. over 4 kcal per gram for the candy bar.

In short, cheaper food has a higher caloric content on average than fresh foods yielding bigger asses.

Why might the poor of our society tend toward obesity at a greater rate than the rich? Is that the question? Aside from the excellent points that Amoeba Protozoa made about average price per calorie, I have a couple of ideas.

The first would be that exercise and outdoor activity have become a luxury for many people. While some working class people still work physically intensive jobs, most blue-collar jobs these days, especially those held by women, don't involve a lot of moving around (think secretary, hairdresser, day care worker, assembly line worker, etc). Add to that the fact that people might be working two jobs to make ends meet, that they have to care for their children on top of that, and that they're probably pretty tired at the end of the day, and there isn't a lot of time, energy, or money left over for step aerobics.

It's interesting to think that at one time, when it was the poor who had to work outside doing heavy labor, it was a sign of status to be overweight and pale: It meant you didn't have to work in the fields. Today, the opposite is true. It is the poor who are trapped behind sales counters, out of the sunlight, never moving, and the rich who can afford personal trainers and tanning booths.

Secondly, eating disorders are epidemic in very poor areas, especially among women. Think about it: Food can give comfort and escape in the same way that alcohol and drugs can, but it costs less and doesn't leave you unable to care for your children or show up on time for work. It's quite a responsible choice in many ways.

Add to that a widespread ignorance about good eating habits, parents too tired to cook proper meals, paychecks too short to buy fresh food and a culture that is shoving food advertisements in your face every thirty seconds, and you have a lot of people who are going to get fatter than they want to be.

Consider also the esoteric branch of social psychology called "person perception." It deals with the importance of being attractive, and how attractive people are more successful in social, romantic, academic, and career roles. Likewise, us ugly trolls will have fewer friends, fewer sexual partners, lower grades, and lower paying, less important jobs.

Research shows that, when shown only photographs of attractive and unattractive people, the good looking ones are assumed to be friendlier, kinder, cleaner, and smarter. Fat, ugly people are generally assumed to be mean, stupid, and dirty. It has been demonstrated that tall, handsome men are more likely to be promoted, and beautiful women are more often hired.

Especially in America, we hate the unattractive. We view obesity with contempt. We starve, burn, paint, scrape, and beat ourselves into the mold of beauty. And apparently for good reason.

One could argue that unattractiveness among lower socioeconomic brackets is a cause, rather than an effect. It could well be that, by a curse of genetics, these people are consistently passed up for promotion, fail to attract successful mates, and then endow their arbitrarily undesirable genes to their children. Thus we create an economic underclass, held in place via their ugliness. Good looking people go up, and the bad looking ones stay down. How American.
