glass ceiling

A metaphorical barrier allowing the observation of higher ranks but not the progression to those ranks. Most commonly used to refer to the prevalent but widely unmentioned attitudes and conditions preventing female progress and equality during and prior to the 90's.

It is speculated that if males had started on the underside of the glass ceiling, they would have been too... occupied to do anything about it.
