  • Commonly known as Soda or Soda Ash
  • Chemical Formula is Na2CO3
  • Odourless
  • Opaque, crystalline or granular solid
  • pH 11.5 (Alkaline)
  • Absorbs moisture from the air
  • Corrodes aluminium, lead and iron
  • Soluble in water
  • Insoluble in acetone and Ether
  • Reacts exothermically with strong acids evolving carbon dioxide
  • Prepared by dissolving ammonia in purified brine, the resulting solution being treated with carbon dioxide

    Sodium Carbonate is used in leather manufacture, particularly in chrome tannages, to control pH. It is also used in the manufacture of paper and in the preparation of chemical pulps, glass and soaps/detergents etc.
