System V is a commercial operating system based on system III, which in turn was based on UNIX version 7.

It was released in 1983. In 1984 System Vr2 followed. In 1987 System Vr3 and in 1990 System Vr4, which was partly based on 4.3BSD. It later evolved into Solaris and Irix.

The name, System V, is often abbreviated to "SV", with the release number appended (e.g. "SVR4").
