In several mystical traditions (including
Huna,
Kabala, and
Feri) the talking-self is one of the three
souls which along with the dense, physical
body (AKA the
goof) constitute a
human being.
The talking-self is the conscious, verbal soul. The talking-self is the
CPU of a person and is located in the brain. The talking-self does all cognitive tasks requiring the symbolic manipulation of
language and the expression of
intention and
attention. The talking-self is that part of our selves which seeks (with greater or lessor
success) to impose our
desires on the
consensus reality.
The talking-self is called the
uhani in Huna and the
ruach in Kabala
