A movement in the late 1700's and early 1800's through North America, mainly through what was to become and was the United States. It was a religious movement to get people to temper the use of alcohol, to avoid problems with drunkenness. This changed into complete abstinence from alcohol for many evangelical churches, which helped them earn tremendous amounts of money.
