SERENDIP project

SERENDIP is a SETI project from the University of California. It has been in operation since 1979. There have been four incarnations of the project since its inception, each more powerful then the last.

  • SERENDIP I (1979- 1986): utilized 100-channel spectrum analyzer which was located at UC Berkeley's Hat Creek Observatory.
  • SERENDIP II (1986 to 1988) : observed 65,000 channels per second and was primarily located at the NRAO radio telescope at Green Bank.
  • SERENDIP III (1992- 1996) examined 4.2 million channels every 1.7 seconds in a 12 MHz-wide band. It was centered at 429 MHz.. This project took place at Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.
  • SERENDIP IV (1996-today): also at Arecibo, this project examines 168 million channels every 1.7 seconds in a 100 MHz band centered at 1.42 GHz.
