The Geminids are an annual
meteor shower which lasts for 2 weeks with maximum activity between local
midnight and
dawn on Dec. 14th when the
radiant is high in the sky. At this time, you may see 100 meteors per hour on a clear night. You can also see some good long tailed shooting stars at
dusk when they're
grazing the
atmosphere.
To find the
radiant, look for the
constellation of
Orion then look above his head for a large rectangle of bright
stars. This is the
constellation of
Gemini, the
radiant of this shower is between the
stars Castor and Pollux, the
twins - hence the name Geminids.
