Lochgilphead is a small village in Mid-
Argyll,
Scotland,
UK, located at the end of
Loch Gilp, a small Loch connected to
Loch Fyne. It was founded around 1790 as a planned settlement, becoming a important trade post after the opening of the
Crinan Canal, an artificial waterway giving ships access to Loch Fyne without having to circumnavigate the
Kintyre Peninsula.
It lost its significance with the advent of the 20th century, when more and more freight was hauled by road, rendering the canal and the neighbouring Ardrishaig useless.
These days it is home to the Argyll and Bute Council Headquarters, 4 Pubs (The Argyll, The Comm, Victoria Hotel, the Stag), a psychiatric hospital and a couple of shops.
Tourists tend to drive through it.
Attending Karaoke nights in the "Stag" should be avoided at all costs, as long lasting nightmares could result.
