Boston man convicted for the 1965 murder of
mobster Edward "Teddy" Deegan. Limone was granted a new
trial and released without
bail January 5, 2001, after newly published
FBI documents indicated that the FBI knew that Limone was
innocent of the
crime. Limone spent over 32 years in prison, including 4 years on
death row, until
Massachusetts eliminated the
death penalty in 1972.
66 year-old Limone was freed after the DOJ released the reports from a special task force setup to investigate internal corruption in the FBI. The reports suggested Limone and three other men accused of the crime did not kill Deegan.
Now-retired FBI agents said the government not only had information that the men were innocent, but also allowed informant Joseph "The Animal" Barboza to testify against his enemies as the only witness at trial.
